A new chapter in the Judas Priest legacy is about to unfold on the big screen. The Ballad of Judas Priest, the upcoming documentary about the British heavy metal pioneers, will receive its world premiere next month at the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale), one of the most respected film events in the world.

Co-directed by acclaimed documentary filmmaker Sam Dunn and Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello—in his directorial debut—the film promises an intimate, uncensored look at a band that didn’t just participate in the birth of heavy metal, but helped define its sound, style and attitude. The project is a production of Banger Films, the company behind some of the most respected rock documentaries of the past two decades, which already sets expectations high.

Drawing from Judas Priest’s more than 50-year career, the documentary traces their journey from working-class Birmingham roots to global metal icons. With over 50 million records sold, 19 studio albums, and a Rock And Roll Hall of Fame induction, Priest’s story is inseparable from the story of heavy metal itself. Anthems like “Breaking The Law” and “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’” are positioned not just as hits, but as cultural milestones.

According to the directors, the film explores not only the music but also how Judas Priest helped shape metal’s visual identity and gradually makes the scene more inclusive. Crucially, the band granted the filmmakers deep, behind-the-scenes access, suggesting a level of honesty and vulnerability rarely seen in legacy-band documentaries.

The film is presented and distributed by Sony Music Vision, ensuring global reach once it moves beyond the festival circuit. For now, there is still no trailer or official footage released, which only adds to the anticipation. A premiere at Berlinale, however, signals confidence in the documentary’s cinematic quality and narrative weight.

A well-crafted documentary that captures Judas Priest from the inside is no small event for the metal world. If it delivers on its promise, The Ballad of Judas Priest could become one of the definitive audiovisual testaments to a band whose influence continues to echo across generations of metalheads. And with its debut at such a renowned festival, it feels like only a matter of time before the first images—and revelations—arrive.
