Four weeks. That's all that stands between us and the arrival of London Metalfest.

On September 11th and 12th, a brand-new metal festival will hit the capital, bringing a distinctly European festival spirit to the heart of Camden — and with exactly four weeks to go, the countdown is officially on.

London certainly isn't short of gigs. What it has perhaps been missing is something that feels a little more like the European metal festival experience: multiple stages, a packed day of music, a metal market, food, a pre-festival party and the feeling that the event starts long before the first band walks onstage.

That's exactly what London Metalfest is aiming to bring to the capital.

The festival comes from a fresh team on the London scene, but one backed by professional industry experience and strong roots in the European festival circuit. The idea is simple: take some of that European festival spirit and drop it right into one of London's most iconic music districts.

And they're not exactly starting small.

FRIDAY NIGHT: METAL ON THE THAMES

Before Camden gets loud on Saturday, London Metalfest begins on Friday with something rather more unusual: a metal cruise on the River Thames.

Departing from Westminster Pier at 5:45pm, the boat party will take metal fans up and down the Thames with live music onboard, turning some of London's most recognisable scenery into the backdrop for the festival's opening night.

Because apparently simply going to the pub before a metal festival wasn't ambitious enough.

It's a great way of establishing what London Metalfest wants to be from the beginning: not simply a collection of gigs under one banner, but a full weekend experience.

SATURDAY: CAMDEN BECOMES LONDON METALFEST

On Saturday, September 12th, the main event takes over Camden with live music spread across three of its best-known venues: Electric Ballroom, The Underworld and The Dev.

Three venues. One ticket.

Alongside the music, there will be a dedicated metal market and food, giving the day much more of the atmosphere of a traditional European festival while keeping everything in the middle of Camden.

It's an interesting concept. Rather than trying to recreate an outdoor festival somewhere on the outskirts of London, London Metalfest is using the character, venues and history already embedded in Camden and effectively turning part of the neighbourhood into the festival site.

DOOM, THRASH, DARK ROCK AND MUCH MORE

And then, of course, there are the bands.

Leading the charge are Swedish doom metal legends Candlemass, genuine pioneers of the genre and a name that immediately gives the inaugural London Metalfest some serious weight.

Dutch dark rockers Dool bring their wonderfully atmospheric and hypnotic sound, while British thrash veterans Acid Reign should make sure proceedings don't remain quite so contemplative for long.

Progressive groove metallers Cobra the Impaler add another considerable dose of weight to the bill, bringing their combination of crushing riffs, technical muscle and progressive ambition to Camden.

are another name we're particularly looking forward to seeing — a band very much on our radar at The Riff Collective — while Wretched Soul and Aethoria add further firepower to a bill built around different corners of the heavy music spectrum.

And then there are Genitorturers.

The industrial metal provocateurs have spent decades combining heavy music, theatricality and a live show that is unlikely to be confused with anyone else's. Let's just say that if you've never seen them before, London Metalfest might provide one of the weekend's more memorable introductions.

The Heritance, Unnatural Order and many more are still only part of a much larger line-up — and we'll be taking a closer look at the bands heading to Camden in a separate feature before the festival.

GET READY WITH THE RIFF COLLECTIVE PLAYLIST

Four weeks gives you plenty of time to do your homework — and we've made that considerably easier.

We've put together a special Spotify playlist featuring bands from the London Metalfest line-up. Whether you're already counting down the days or looking to discover who you should be watching across the three venues, consider this your soundtrack to the festival.

Turn it up, find a few new bands and start planning your route around Camden.

We'll be covering London Metalfest throughout the weekend for The Riff Collective, with live coverage, photography and plenty more from across the three venues.

London has the venues. It has the history. It certainly has the metal fans.

Now it has a new metal festival.

Four weeks to go.

Three iconic venues. One ticket.

See you in Camden.
