SLIPKNOT BEGIN A NEW ERA WITH SURPRISE SINGLE ‘ARSENAL’
Slipknot have returned with “Arsenal”, their first completely new song since the release of The End, So Far in 2022 — and the opening strike from a considerably different version of the Iowa giants.
The surprise single marks the recording debut of former Sepultura drummer Eloy Casagrande, who joined Slipknot in 2024 following the departure of Jay Weinberg. It is also the band’s first release since parting ways with longtime members Craig Jones and, more recently, turntablist Sid Wilson.
That makes “Arsenal” more than simply another new Slipknot track. It is the first proper document of a reshaped band entering its next chapter.
Premiered as the Hottest Record on BBC Radio 1’s New Music Show with Jack Saunders, the song throws almost every familiar Slipknot weapon into its five-minute assault: frantic momentum, violent percussion, heavyweight riffs and a commanding performance from Corey Taylor. The vocalist described it as an “absolutely pummelling experience”, highlighting the way its hyperactive opening eventually gives way to a slower and more imposing final section.
The accompanying video was directed by M. Shawn “Clown” Crahan and features actor Jackson White. It arrives through the band’s newly established (sic)est Records, making “Arsenal” Slipknot’s first release through their own label following the completion of their long-standing relationship with Roadrunner Records.
Is a new Slipknot album coming?
A new album is certainly in development, although “Arsenal” appears to be standing on its own.
Guitarist Jim Root recently revealed that Slipknot have accumulated around 50 musical arrangements while working with producer Matt Wallace, whose credits include Faith No More and Mushroomhead. Root described the writing process as organic and experimental, with material ranging from fast, aggressive riffs to doom-laden passages, melodic sections and atmospheric interludes.
However, Root has reportedly clarified that “Arsenal” is a standalone single and is not expected to feature on Slipknot’s forthcoming eighth studio album. No title or release date for that record has yet been announced.
For now, “Arsenal” serves as a declaration of intent: a newly configured Slipknot reminding everyone that, despite the departures and uncertainty surrounding the band, there is still plenty of ammunition left.
